Oct 31, 2011 - Currently Poland has some 300 agricultural biogas power projects in different development phases, energy news portal Cire.pl reported last week, citing an information obtained from the Polish Institute for Renewable Energy.
The government policy to support agricultural biogas plants has been successful, according to the website.
The Polish Institute for Renewable Energy's Database of Biogas Developers and Investors 2011 shows that Poland has 15 operational agricultural biogas plants with an average capacity of 1.47 MW located in seven provinces. Another 65 projects are at an advanced investment stage.
As many as 226 agricultural biogas projects are in the initial phase of implementation. Some 45 of them are located in west-central Poland's Wielkopolska region which has the largest maize and animal operations and the biggest potential for agricultural biogas production in the country.
Lately, Poland has been enjoying a trend to invest in large facilities with an average capacity of some 1.5 MW. The cost of these project ranges from PLN 14 million (USD 4.5m/EUR 3.2m) to PLN 16 million per 1 MW and is some 30% more expensive compared to industry leader Germany, the website reported.
