BDEW appeals for limited state intervention in energy sector

Sep 11, 2013 - Germany's utility lobby group BDEW has called on the government to limit its intervention in the energy market after the federal election later this month.

The organisation will present a proposal for a sweeping reform to the German green act EEG at the end of September, BDEW head Hildegard Mueller said at a joint event on Tuesday organised together with the VDMA Power Systems turbine makers group.

Mueller and VDMA Power Systems head Thorsten Herdan said the EEG should be reformed to synchronise renewable energy growth with the expansion of the grid. In addition, measures have to be taken to cut the rising costs associated with Germany's shift to green energy.

Herdan said the struggling offshore market is still integral to Germany's green energy plans. The offshore expansion has been hit by installation and connection delays. Herdan suggested that the government should create a preliminary law for offshore power to attract new investments.
