Balance Power wins planning nod for 50-MW battery project in England

UK independent energy developer Balance Power said today it has obtained planning consent for a 50-MW battery storage project in Wolverhampton West, England.

The company’s proposal was approved on appeal after an inspector found that the project’s environmental benefits and support the UK’s efforts to decarbonise its energy system.

To be located on the edge of South Staffordshire, the Wolves West project is planned to enter construction early next year. Once up and running, it will be capable of storing electricity that can cover the consumption of up to 11,000 homes, Balance Power estimates.

“Battery storage technology is among the most effective tools to expand the integration of renewables onto the grid; helping to stabilise energy reliability and in turn, reducing the cost of electricity for consumers,” said Dan Levy, planning assistant at Balance Power.

The UK developer noted it has secured planning permission for 27 energy storage project with a combined capacity of 312 MW. Since the start of 2022, it has received the green light for 144 MW of schemes, which were later sold, while an additional 750 MW of projects have grid-connections and are under development.
