Swiss renewable energy producer and trader Axpo Holding AG on Monday announced that it is stepping into the Finnish wind power market with a plan to develop, build and operate wind farms in the Scandinavian country.
The Swiss firm has opened new offices in the city of Vaasa, on the west coast of Finland, to steer its business throughout the country. The local team is led by managing director Joakim Ingves, a press release said.
Axpo intends to buy development projects at any stage and of any size as well as initiate its own greenfield development activities. The company has already had preliminary discussions with a number of interested landowners and communities.
Axpo sees excellent opportunities in the Finnish wind energy market as the Swiss group aims to develop 3 GW of wind energy by the end of this decade.
“According to government plans, Finland aims to be climate-neutral by 2035. To achieve this, the construction of onshore wind power must be accelerated. Axpo is keen to contribute to this goal,” Ingves noted in the statement.
Axpo has so far developed more than 80 wind farms with a total installed capacity of about 1.5 GW in Germany and France.
