January 13 (Renewables Now) - Avangrid Inc (NYSE:AGR), the US subsidiary of Spanish electric utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE), said on Wednesday it will be participating in the newly announced offshore wind lease auction in the New York Bight, to be held next month.

As unveiled by the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), on February 23 it will auction six lease areas totalling 480,000 acres off the coasts of New York and New Jersey that could accommodate between 5.6 GW and 7 GW of offshore wind capacity. The competitive process will be the first US offshore wind lease sale in over three years.

Avangrid welcomed the news, with CEO Dennis Arriola saying the following: “Given our 4.9 GW off-shore wind project portfolio, we look forward to participating in this historic auction. We have a strong track record of developing projects that incorporate all stakeholders and community interests in a way that brings not only clean energy benefits, but also sustainable economic and societal benefits through project labor agreements, workforce and supply chain development, and marine mammal protections.”

The company’s current offshore wind project portfolio in the US includes a 50% stake in the 800-MW Vineyard Wind 1 project off Massachusetts, along with full ownership of the 804-MW Park City Wind project in Connecticut, the 1,232-MW Commonwealth Wind scheme in Massachusetts and the 2,500-MW Kitty Hawk development off North Carolina and Virginia.
