Austria to use Christmas trees as biomass

(SeeNews) - Jan 2, 2013 - Austrian municipalities and districts are offering collecting points for Christmas trees that will be processed into woodchip or used in biomass power plants.

Environmental minister, Niki Berlakovich, said today that about 135,000 trees may be collected only in Vienna, which will result in 560 tonnes (1.24m pounds) of biomass. This will be enough for the production of 1,890 MWh of long distance heating, which will meet the needs of 3,000 households for a month.
