June 19 (Renewables Now) - Atlantis Resources Ltd (LON:ARL) has started negotiations with the Duchy of Lancaster for an option for a long-term lease for a portion of the proposed site of a 160-MW tidal barrage and flood protection project.
The Wyre Valley tidal range project is to be built between Fleetwood and Knott's End on the Lancashire coast, chiefly situated on the Duchy estate.
Singapore-based Atlantis in February joined the project, initiated by Natural Energy Wire (NEW). It said today it is expected that the process of obtaining the needed consents to begin development would take about three years. An option agreement with the Duchy would give the necessary rights and access for the majority of the required land.
Mott Macdonald, BAM Nuttall, Arcadis and Andritz Hydro have been involved in the design of the facility, which is to be capable of producing nearly 300 GWh annually, while also providing flood protection.
Atlantis, known as the developer of the 398-MW MeyGen tidal power project in Scotland, recently set up a division focused on non-tidal stream “wet renewables”. That unit, Atlantis Energy, is partnering with NEW in Wyre.
