Singapore-based Atlantis Resources Ltd (LON:ARL) said today it has agreed to share the transmission assets used by the initial phase of its 398-MW MeyGen tidal power project in Scotland with a nearby wind park, currently under development.
Last month, the first phase of MeyGen was hooked to the 33-kV Ness of Quoys distribution network. The company noted that the part to which it is connected is constrained and other generators cannot use it. However, MeyGen has agreed to allow a new four-turbine wind farm developed by Lochend Wind Energy Ltd in Caithness to deliver power to the grid whenever the tidal array is not making full use of the available export capacity.
According to Atlantis, this is the first time UK wind and tidal projects are combined in such a way.
“Whilst we cannot claim tidal power is able to lend the same predictability to the current political climate, we are pleased to say that our project remains unaffected by recent events,” said Tim Cornelius, CEO of Atlantis.
MeyGen’s Phase 1A will consist of one Atlantis and three Andritz Hydro Hammerfest turbines, each with a capacity of 1.5 MW. The installation of the first turbines is scheduled for the coming months. They are seen to generate first power in the second half of the year.
