Nov 29, 2011 - Areva Wind, the wind power unit of French nuclear company Areva (EPA:AREVA), today unveiled the M5000-135, a new turbine under its M5000 platform.
The Areva M5000 is a 5-MW wind energy converter designed for offshore conditions. It is produced at the company's plant in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The new M5000-135 builds on the M5000 technology with a new rotor with a diameter of 135 metres (443 ft). Areva Wind said that the new rotor along with a light design and an improved nacelle would help to cut energy costs and optimise revenues. Additional benefits include improved serviceability thanks to condition monitoring atop the turbine's built-in system redundancies.
The machine's 66-m flexible offshore blades are 10 m longer than those of the M5000-116 and boost the M5000's swept area by 35%.
The company expects to start serial production of the M5000-135 in the second half of 2014.
