Dec 23, 2014 - French group Areva SA (EPA:AREVA) has been selected as the turbine supplier for Iberdrola’s (MCE:IBE) up to 350-MW Wikinger wind project in the German Baltic Sea.
In a statement on Friday, Areva said it will deliver 70 units of its M5000-135 turbines, each with a capacity of 5 MW. The deal is estimated at about EUR 620 million (USD 758m). It also calls for the provision of turbine maintenance services for five years, with the option for a five-year extension.
The French company will implement the order within the framework of its 50/50 offshore wind joint venture with Spain’s Gamesa (MCE:GAM), which was unveiled this summer. It will make the equipment at its factories in Bremerhaven and Stade, northern Germany. Turbines are slated to be installed as early as 2017 on jacket foundations.
The Wikinger wind farm, worth EUR 1.4 billion, is being built off the coast of the island of Rugen, northern Germany. Once up and running, it will be able to generate enough electricity for about 350,000 German homes and help save nearly 600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. The capacity of the park was initially planned to be 400 MW but was later reduced to 350 MW.
