Airbus, Chinese university collaborate on aviation biofuels

Aug 27, 2012 - European aircraft maker Airbus has partnered with Beijing's Tsinghua University to prepare an analysis for sustainable production of aviation biofuels in China, Airbus parent EADS (EPA:EAD) said today.

The study will identify suitable Chinese feedstocks for aviation biofuels, including cooking oil and algae, that best meet economic and environmental criteria. The sustainability analysis is to be completed at the beginning of 2013.

The partners will then map out ways for commercialisation of alternative fuel production in China, a key market for the aviation industry.

The project will help the aircraft maker to achieve its environmental targets, said Frederic Eychenne, manager of Airbus New Energies Programme. Airbus plans to develop a biofuel value chain in every continent by 2012. Thus with the Chinese project it will add Asia to Latin America, Australia, Europe and Africa.
