Air France-KLM supports development of biofuel for aviation industry

Jul 18, 2011 - Franco-Dutch airline Air France-KLM (EPA:AF) said today it had launched an initiative, called Biofuel Flightpath, in collaboration with the European Commission, plane maker Airbus, various European airlines and European biofuel producers.
The participants in the project will support the production, storage and distribution of sustainable biofuels for the aviation industry.
The roadmap targets an annual production of two million tonnes of biofuel by 2020 and the introduction of financial mechanisms to support the creation of a production sector in Europe.
This is not the first step of Air France-KLM in promoting biofuels for the aviation sector.
Last May, Air France signed a partnership agreement with the Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy Commission for the production of biofuel from forest waste in France.
For its part, KLM has operated several commercial flights with biofuel mixed with kerosene.
Moreover, Air France-KLM has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the sixth consecutive year.
