US power generation group AES Corp (NYSE:AES) said on Tuesday it has acquired a New York-based company with a 612-MW portfolio of wind parks from global investment firm Carlyle (NASDAQ:CG).
The value of the acquisition remained under wraps.
Valcour Wind Energy LLC’s portfolio consists of six operational wind farms in the state of New York, which collectively account for roughly 25% of the state’s wind power generation. Three of those plants, of 279 MW in total, are located in New York’s Clinton County, two farms with a combined capacity of 227 MW are situated in Wyoming County and a 106-MW wind park is generating electricity in Franklin County.
Carlyle acquired Valcour back in 2018 in its first wind investment. Since than, the six wind farms have been operated, maintained and managed by Cogentrix Energy, a Carlyle portfolio company. Those responsibilities will now be transferred to AES.
"This wind portfolio complements our 1 GW solar pipeline in the state, allowing us to provide custom offerings such as our 24/7 product to realize a carbon-free energy grid,” said Leo Moreno, president of AES Clean Energy. He added that the Valcour portfolio offers significant opportunity for repowering.
