ADB helps finance construction of 24 MW of small HPPs in Uzbekistan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a deal to provide a USD-60-million (EUR 50.9m) loan for the construction of three small hydropower plants (HPP) in Uzbekistan totalling 24 MW.

JSC Uzbekhydroenergo will receive the 25-year loan to build the 10.3-MW Tamshush, 7.5-MW Chappasuy and 6.2-MW Rabat HPPs on the Aksu River. More specifically, the company will use the funds to cover the procurement of machinery and equipment, construction and installation works, project management and high-voltage network creation. A portion will also be used to finance the tender to select a general contractor.

The three plants are expected to be commissioned in 2022.

Uzbekistan wants to produce about 25% of its power from renewable energy sources by 2030. As part of the country’s national energy strategy, this will be achieved, in part, through 3.8 GW of hydroelectric generating capacity.
