Spanish infrastructure and renewable energy company Acciona SA (BME:ANA) announced today it will construct a 29-MW thermal waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Western Australia.
Located in East Rockingham, the project will require investments of AUD 511 million (USD 353.7m/EUR 319m). Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), Australia's green bank, backed the project with AUD 57.5 million in financing, while the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) provided AUD 18 million in recoupable grant funding.
Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) and Acciona have been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the plant and they will also hold equity stakes in the project, alongside John Laing Group plc. The latter said separately it is investing AUD 51.5 million in the project, known as the East Rockingham Resource Recovery Facility.
Once operational, the WTE plant is expected to generate enough power to meet the annual demand of more than 36,000 households and offset over 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year. A power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed for 25 MW of the plant's capacity.
The facility will treat around 300,000 tonnes of residual waste from municipal, commercial and industrial sources every year, sourced through long-term agreements with local councils and French waste management company Suez.
Back in May, Acciona broke ground on the 36-MW Kwinana WTE facility, also based in Western Australia.
