Acciona opens wind energy storage plant in Spain

Spanish infrastructure group Acciona SA (BME:ANA) announced on Wednesday it has opened the first wind energy battery storage plant in Spain.

Located in Barasoain, Navarre province, the energy storage system was installed at a grid-connected wind farm to show how batteries can help boost the penetration of renewable energy in the transmission system and optimise the management of the energy produced.

The system includes two batteries, a fast-response 1 MW/0.39 MWh battery that can maintain 1 MW of power for 20 minutes, and a slower-response battery of 0.7 MW/0.7 MWh that can maintain 0.7 MW for one hour, the company said.

The project uses Samsung's Li-ion SDI technology. The energy storage system works together with a 3-MW AW116/3000 wind turbine. Five such machines make up the Parque Eolico Experimental Barasoain operated by Acciona since 2013.

Acciona controls the facility through a in-house developed software, it noted.

The project has obtained funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
