Swiss group ABB Ltd (SWX:ABBN) said today it has won a contract to supply high-voltage direct current (HVDC) Light converter systems for the 3.6-GW Dogger Bank offshore wind power complex in the North Sea.
The order was made by the project developers, SSE Renewables and Norway’s Equinor ASA (NYSE:EQNR). ABB noted that while it is contracted to deliver the HVDC Light converter systems, its Norwegian partner Aibel will supply two HVDC offshore converter platforms. The Swiss group also mentioned that this is one of its biggest ever contracts.
ABB also pointed out that this project will mark the first ever use of the HVDC technology in the UK’s offshore wind market.
Earlier this month, SSE Renewables said that the Dogger Bank project, which consists of three separate 1.2-GW developments, is moving towards final investment decision, scheduled for next year.
The Dogger Bank Creyke Beck A & B projects, and the Dogger Bank Teesside A scheme were recently successful in the third Contracts for Difference (CfDs) allocation round in the UK.
