ABB Ltd (VTX:ABBN) has secured USD 300 million (EUR 262m) of orders in China to supply critical power technologies for two long-distance links each with a capacity to transmit 8 GW of wind and thermal power.
The two new 800-kV ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission links will carry power from Shanxi to Nanjing and from Jiuquan to Hunan, the Switzerland-based power and automation technology group said on Thursday.
The contracts include the supply of HVDC converters, converter transformers and components, capacitors and filters, and high voltage circuit breakers.
"These projects will help integrate more renewable energy and further strengthen China’s transmission grid," said Claudio Facchin, president of ABB's power systems division.
The company noted that the use of 800 kV UHVDC links can substantially reduce transmission losses and that China has in recent years focused on developing UHVDC connections to boost capacity and improve grid efficiency.
The Jiuquan-Hunan link represents the world and China's second 800-kV UHVDC to 750-kV UHV alternating current (AC) connection, ABB said. The company was selected to supply converter transformers and components to the first such connection from Lingzhou to Shaoxing.
