Jul 9, 2014 - Swiss group ABB (VTX:ABBN) will supply a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission system for the 500-MW Maritime Link interconnection project on the Canadian island of Newfoundland, it said today.
The electrical engineering major has received the USD-400-million (EUR 294m) order from NSP Maritime Link Inc, a unit of Canadian utility Emera Inc (TSE:EMA).
The Maritime Link will allow the transportation of renewable energy produced in Newfoundland and Labrador to the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. ABB noted that its power transmission solution will actually create the first link between the island and the North American power grid. In addition, the transmission system will allow the integration of additional renewables, further stabilise the grid and enable power sharing.
The project includes two converter stations for the 200-kV HVDC link, two 230-kV alternating current (AC) substations in Newfoundland, one 345-kV AC substation in Nova Scotia and two cable transition stations. The Maritime Link is expected to be commissioned in 2017.
