ABB gets substation order to strengthen German grid

Power and automation technology company ABB (VTX:ABBN) said today it has secured a USD-35-million (EUR 31.8m) order to upgrade a substation to strengthen the grid in southern Germany.

The Swiss-based company said that integrating growing amounts of renewables into the grid required greater flexibility and capacity of the transmission network and because of that the voltage level of many power lines and substations was being increased from 220 kV to 380 kV.

ABB has been contracted by German transmission system operator TransnetBW to replace an existing 220-kV air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substation in Offenburg with a compact 380 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation. It will design, supply, install and connect the substation to the 380-kV network, and also build a new terminal tower.

Under its energy transition plan, Energiewende, Germany aims for at least 80% renewable energy by 2050.
