World to connect 3.6 GW offshore wind in 2015 - Make

About 3.6 GW of offshore wind capacity will be connected to the grid in 2015, nearly doubling year-on-year, mainly thanks to Germany, Make Consulting said.

Several converter stations in Germany are going online so many turbines are getting connected. A report by Stiftung Offshore Windenergie in July showed that Germany had hooked 1,765 MW of offshore wind in the first six months of 2015, while a further 90 turbines with a total capacity of 380.7 MW were waiting for connection.

According to the Global Offshore Wind Power Market 2015 report by Make, the global offshore wind market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19% between 2015 and 2024. The renewable energy consultancy expects weaker figures for 2016, mainly because of the UK’s transition to the Contract for Difference (CfD) mechanism and the zero expected grid-connections there. Make sees high growth after that.
