January 16 (Renewables Now) - German engineering firm Voith Hydro has received an order to provide turbines for a 1,200-MW pumped storage project in China, the company said on Monday.

The deal was awarded by Henan Tianchi Pumped Storage Co to Voith Hydro Shanghai Co Ltd, calling for the engineering company to deliver four 300-MW Francis reversible pump turbines and generators, as well as auxiliary equipment, for the Henan Tianchi pumped storage facility. Voith expects to supply the equipment by December 2020.

The proposed plant will be situated in Henan province, central China, with its first unit planned to be operational by the end of September 2021. The entire facility is scheduled to start commercial operations in June 2022.

Voith noted it has so far installed more than 200 pumped storage plants globally with a combined capacity of more than 25,000 MW.
