Dec 19, 2013 - Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) said today it had received its first order for the V112-3.3 MW offshore turbine from Vattenfall AB for a 49.5-MW scheme in UK waters.
The Swedish state-owned utility has ordered 15 Vestas turbines for the extension of its 90-MW Kentish Flats offshore wind farm. The Danish firm will supply, install and commission the machines, which it will also service under a five-year AOM 5000 agreement.
At the start of November, Vattenfall’s board gave the go-ahead to the company’s plan to pour GBP 150 million (USD 245.5m/EUR 179.5m) into the 49.5-MW project. Construction is to commence in the middle of 2015. In the statement today Vestas explained that for the first time it will use its pre-assembly concept. It will pre-assemble and pre-commission at its facility at the port of Esbjerg in Denmark the 15 machines and will then ship them directly to the Kentish Flats extension. Thus the company expects to cut significantly the project's cost by trimming unnecessary transport of turbine components overland and commissioning hours at sea.
The extension project was approved by the UK’s Department of Energy & Climate Change in February 2013. Once operational, the additional turbines will produce enough power to satisfy the electricity needs of about 42,000 local homes.
