(ADPnews) - Dec 20, 2010 - Veolia Energy North America, part of French utility group Veolia Environnement (EPA:VIE), said on Monday it commenced work on a 4.8 MW landfill gas-to-power project in Wisconsin, USA.
The facility will consist of three landfill reciprocating engine generator sets, each with a 1.6 MW capacity, that will turn the captured landfill gas into electricity. The unit, to be up and running early in the summer of 2011, will produce 42,000 MWh annually, enough to meet the needs of 2,800 households. It is estimated that the system will save 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
Local power and gas utility Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) will buy the entire electricity output of the landfill gas-to-energy plant, as well as the related renewable energy credits. Under the 2005 Wisconsin Act 141, local utilities are required to gradually raise the share of renewable energy in their overall sales, as the state seeks green sources to bring 10% of its electricity mix by 2015.
At present, Veolia Energy operates over 2,400 MW of renewable and alternative power plants globally.
