Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall AB has installed the first turbine at its 54.4-MW Ray wind farm in northeastern England, the company said on Wednesday.
The project is located on the Ray Estate, near Kirkwhelpington in Northumberland. It now has one Senvion 3.4M104 turbine. The remaining 15 machines will be installed over the summer.
Preparatory works at the site began last summer. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to produce enough power per year to meet the needs of around 30,000 UK households.
"Along with the 45 highly skilled people working in our Hexham Office, Ray is providing employment for around 70 skilled and semi-skilled workers involved solely in the construction of the wind farm," said Paul Nickless, Vattenfall's construction manager for the project.
Separately, it was announced Wednesday that Vattenfall and wind turbine tower steel fabricator CS Wind UK will co-operate on potential supply contracts for Vattenfall's UK development pipeline.
