US Toys R Us opens 5.38 MW rooftop solar system in New Jersey
Aug 15, 2011 - US toy retailer Toys R Us Inc last week announced the opening of its 5.38 MW rooftop solar power system at its distribution centre in the US state of New Jersey.
US energy producer and trader Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) has built, owns and maintains the solar system, which includes 37,000 Uni-Solar panels supplied by United Solar, a unit of US flexible solar laminate maker Energy Conversion Devices Inc (NASDAQ:ENER). Toys R Us buys the system's output under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The facility is expected to generate 6.36 million kWh of electricity a year, which is enough to save 72% of the building's electricity needs, Toys R Us said, adding that it was the largest operational rooftop solar system in North America.
Under the PPA, Constellation Energy will keep the renewable energy certificates (REC), allocating 7,500 RECs a year for the next three years to match the electricity used at the Times Square store of Toys R Us.
