February 20 (Renewables Now) - The US could enjoy biofuel blends in transportation fuels of 30% by 2050, in line with a newly presented initiative by the agriculture department.

US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue on Thursday announced a department-wide initiative called the Agriculture Innovation Agenda, the objective of which is to stimulate innovation in order for American agriculture to boost production by 40%, while also reducing its environmental footprint by 50% by 2050.

The initiative includes certain benchmarks to help measure progress on various objectives, including for renewable energy.

For instance, the department envisions an increase in the production of renewable energy feedstocks, as well as in biofuel production efficiency and competitiveness to enable achieving blend rates of 15% of transportation fuels in 2030 and 30% of transportation fuels by 2050, a press statement says.
