US alternative fuel and renewable energy developer U.S. Gain has upgraded its Dallmann East River Dairy digester with a solar microgrid which is expected to generate 1.9 GWh a year to power the day-to-day operations of the facility.
The Brillion, Wisconsin-based digester has been producing renewable natural gas (RNG) for the transportation industry since August 2020. The site has also been equipped with onsite batteries to store electricity and onsite combined heat and power (CHP) technology.
Most of the excess solar energy produced would be used onsite but could also be sold back to the grid, U.S. Gain said in a press release, adding that the newly-integrated system is expected to offset 97% of the Dallmann digester’s electrical energy load that is typically sourced from grid power.
EnTech Solutions, a division of Faith Technologies Incorporated (FTI), served as a key project management partner for the microgrid. It will also provide round-the-clock support and maintenance over a 20-year contract.
U.S. Gain did not disclose the amount of the investment made into the new microgrid.
