University of Brussels takes 3,000 solar panels into operation

Sep 16, 2013 - The Free University of Brussels said Friday it had inaugurated a solar farm that will produce 700,000 kWh of electricity a year.

The installation comprises more than 3,000 solar panels which are placed on the roof of the buildings of the medical campus and the university hospital. It covers an area of more than 10,000 sq m (107,600 sq ft) and its capacity is sufficient to supply 250 homes.

The produced energy will be used for operating theatres and laboratories.

The project, which is set to reduce the annual CO2 emissions by 276 tonnes, is a public-private partnership with City Energy, which specialises in renewable energy.
