Sep 21, 2012 - The Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) said yesterday it had revised downwards by 2.03% its estimate for the 2012/2013 ethanol production of Brazil's largest sugar cane producing region Centre-South.
The ethanol output is now seen to total 21.05 billion litres (5.561bn gallons) in the year to March 31, 2013, up 2.47% in annual terms. Of the volume, 12.75 billion litres are calculated to be hydrous ethanol, while anhydrous ethanol is expected to sum up 8.3 billion litres.
Ethanol exports estimates, on the other hand, were upgraded by 50%, to 2.55 billion litres. UNICA attributed the projected strong increase mainly to the extensive drought that harmed corn production in the USA, leading to a rise in corn-made ethanol prices and turning Brazilian sugar cane extracted ethanol competitive on the US market.
The forecasts of UNICA also show that a total 518.5 million tonnes of sugar cane will be crushed during the current crop year, or 1.87% more than April's projection and 5.14% more compared with the volumes of the 2011/2012 harvest.
