Jul 17, 2013 - Ukraine added 18.32 MW of wind turbines in the first half of 2013 bringing the total to 315.8 MW, the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA) calculates.
The newly added capacity included 12 turbines at six project sites. According to the organisation, the total installed wind farm capacity in Ukraine will reach some 500 MW by end-2013 or the first quarter of 2014.
UWEA also said that all grid-connected wind power plants in the country had generated over 317 million kWh in January-June, or 0.33% of Ukraine’s power. The volume helped offset 256,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Andrey Konechenkov, chairman of the UWEA board, explained that the major obstacles for the wind power sector in Ukraine were the imperfection of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine till 2030 as regards to renewables’ share in the national mix; the lack of a national strategy for renewable energy development; and grid connection issues.
