UK boosts renewable power share to 15.5% in Q2 2013

Sep 26, 2013 - In the second quarter of 2013 renewables accounted for 15.5% of Britain’s electricity generation, up from 9.7% a year earlier, government statistics showed today.

Renewable power production in the Kingdom in April-June reached 12.83 TWh, marking a 55.8% year-on-year jump, according to a report of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) published today. At the end of June, the UK’s total installed renewable electricity capacity amounted to 19.5 GW, rising 38% on June 2012.

For the second quarter of 2013 onshore wind power generation registered a jump of 69.9% on the year to 3.76 TWh, thanks to capacity additions and better wind conditions. Offshore wind output rose by 50.9% to 2.47 TWh. Bioenergy generation, co-firing included, was 58.3% more than a year before at 5.20 TWh. Hydropower production was up 29% to 970 GWh and solar, wave and tidal output increased by 22.4% to 420 GWh.

For the second quarter liquid biofuels made up 3.4% of petrol and diesel consumed in road transport, DECC calculates.
