Turboden to supply 6.5-MW ORC unit for UK biomass plant

Italian turbogenerator systems producer Turboden Srl will supply a 6.5-MW organic rankine cycle (ORC) turbogenerator for a biomass power plant in Sheffield, the UK.

The power-only unit, which will use waste timber wood from demolition sites as fuel, has been ordered by Kantor Energy Ltd, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) principal contractor of the project, Turboden said on Tuesday.

The plant was developed by local company UYE (UK) Ltd and will be operated by Veolia Energy Services Ltd on behalf of Equitix. The project is being realised thanks to a GBP-30-million (USD 45.3m/EUR 42.2m) investment from the UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) and Equitix.

Once up and running, the facility will sell electricity to GDF Suez UK under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). It will also supply renewable heat to the local district heating network.

Turboden is a subsidiary of Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).
