Dec 11, 2012 - US solar provider Tioga Energy Inc today said it had completed a 3.34-MW solar project for Union County in New Jersey.
The project includes installations at 30 sites across the county, generating electricity for municipality-owned facilities such as area schools, libraries and a community center. The systems are mainly rooftop arrays, ranging from below 10 kW to nearly 500 kW. They were installed via a joint venture between New Jersey-based firm Pro-Tech Energy Solutions and electrical contracting and engineering company Huen Electric Inc. Environmental and engineering management specialist Whitman provided design services.
Tioga, which owns and will operate the systems, said the project was the largest public-private partnership of that type in the US. The installations were financed through a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) from Tioga, which says it will sell the electricity to the county at rates that are some 50% below the local utility prices.
The project involved a combination of low-interest municipal bonds, solar renewable energy certificate (SREC) sales and federal tax incentives, according to the announcement.
