Tasmania cuts down solar FiT to USD 0.074/kWh

Aug 19, 2013 - The Tasmanian government will cut the feed-in tariff (FiT) for solar power to AUD 0.08 (USD 0.074/EUR 0.055) per kWh for systems installed in the fourth quarter, compared to existing FiTs of around AUD 27.8/kWh.

Deputy Premier Bryan Green on Sunday said that existing solar producers will receive the higher FiTs until the start of 2019. This also goes for all that submit connection applications by August 30.

The significant reduction in the FiT is related to Tasmania’s transition to competition in the energy market next year, the Deputy Premier explained. The rates from the start of 2014 are yet to be determined. The good news for all that go solar between September and December is that they will be able to use power generated from solar panels to offset both their general power demand as well as hot water and heating needs.

Under the existing Aurora FiT scheme solar system owners received payments per kWh equal to the price that households pay to buy power from the grid. The scheme was also known as the 1:1 FiT.
