Switzerland may cut solar tariffs by 40%

Aug 26, 2013 - Switzerland is planning to cut solar feed-in-tariffs by 35%-40% which may have damaging effects to the industry, Swissolar, the national solar energy association, said on Thursday.

The Swiss government is also considering a decrease in the period for power purchase agreements to 15 from 25 years and a 50% cut in subsidies for PV integrated systems. The solar systems would become profitable after 22 years of operation with the proposed feed-in-tariffs, Swissolar added. According to the association, the planned changes are in violation with Swiss energy laws.

The considered cuts, however, would lead to waiver of automatic annual tariff reduction for PV systems.

If passed, the changes will enter into force as of January 1, 2014. Consultation hearings are open until mid-September.
