Nov 25, 2013 - Switzerland could cover 98% of its power consumption from renewable energy sources by 2050, according to a study by German aeronautics and space research centre DLR published on Friday.
According to DLR's energy scenario, Switzerland can derive 98% of its energy from renewable sources through a rapid expansion of solar energy and a moderate expansion of wind, geothermal, hydro- and biomass power.
In addition, limited imports of wind power from its neighbouring countries in the north and solar power from the south could contribute to the country's green energy supply.
Switzerland's renewable energy sources currently account for 57% of its energy generation. The country is expected to phase out nuclear power by 2025.
In the heating sector, which is currently accounting for 75% energy production from fossil fuels in Switzerland, the share of renewables can be increased to 97% by 2050 from the current 21% by expanding geothermal and solar thermal power.
In addition, biogas, biofuels and hydrogen can replace diesel and petrol in the industry and the transport sector, according to the study.
