SunPower wraps up 13.78-MW PV plant in California

(SeeNews) - Oct 22, 2012 - US solar system provider SunPower Corp (NASDAQ:SPWR) on Friday said its 13.78-MW direct current (DC) solar park at the at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in California had commenced operations.

The photovoltaic (PV) plant is to produce electricity to meet over 30% of the station's annual demand, saving the base USD 13 million (EUR 10m) in power expenses over the coming 20 years.

The solar system is the first federal agency project that is funded through a 20-year power purchase agreement. An affiliated of US insurer MetLife inc (NYSE:MET) bought the plant, while SunPower is operating and maintaining the facility.

SunPower has developed 52 MW of solar power projects at US government facilities to date, it said.
