SunPower Corp (NASDAQ:SPWR) said today it has initiated construction work on an 8.79-MW solar power system at carmaker Toyota Motor North America's new headquarters in Plano, Texas.
The project, whose capacity is nearly 1 MW larger than initially planned, calls for the installation of more than 20,000 solar panels of the E-Series on steel carport structures across the top of four parking garages. Upon completion, the system is expected to produce enough electricity to offset about 33% of the headquarters' energy needs.
The Toyota subsidiary will be buying the output of the solar array under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with SunPower and will own the renewable energy credits associated with the system.
At present, there are SunPower solar arrays at a number of Toyota facilities in the US, including a 1.5-MW system in West Caldwell, New Jersey, a 2.3-MW installation in Ontario, California, as well as an array in Torrance, California that was built back in 2003.
