UK utility SSE plc (LON:SSE) said today that its renewable energy arm has acquired a 49.9-MW wind project in the Scottish Highlands from compatriot RES Group.
SSE Renewables has become the owner of the fully permitted Aberarder scheme, which envisages the construction of a wind farm with 12 turbines with a maximum tip height of up to 130 metres (426.5 feet) in Strathnairn near Inverness. The plant will be sited in close proximity to the 94-MW Dunmaglass wind park that SSE Renewables owns together with Greencoat Renewables.
SSE Renewables intends to initiate construction activities in April 2023 and bring the wind farm online by November of the same year. Once in operation, the plant is expected to generate electricity for almost 50,000 homes annually.
“We have huge ambitions to accelerate deployment of homegrown electricity infrastructure to help strengthen the UK’s energy security, and Aberarder gives us another opportunity to do so,” said Finlay Mccutcheon, director of onshore Europe at SSE Renewables.
The deal has expanded SSE Renewables' secured development pipeline of onshore wind projects in the UK and Ireland to 1,350 MW. The company noted it already has 1,974 MW of commissioned wind farms in the two countries.
