October 5 (SeeNews) - SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ:SCTY) will start producing this month a solar panel with 22% efficiency, which will eventually be the highest volume panel manufactured in the Western Hemisphere.
The US company said Friday it plans to produce the majority of the new photovoltaic (PV) panels at its 1-GW-plus manufacturing facility in Buffalo, New York. Construction of the factory started a year ago, with the opening expected early in 2016.
SolarCity eyes daily production of 9,000-10,000 panels at the Buffalo site, when it reaches full capacity. For now, it is starting production in small quantities at its 100-MW pilot facility.
The new panel has achieved 22.04% module-level efficiency, measured by Renewable Energy Test Center, and "generates more power per square foot than any rooftop solar panel in production". SolarCity used a proprietary process that significantly reduces the manufacturing cost relative to other high-efficiency technologies, it said.
The panel will be installed by the company on rooftops and carports for homes, businesses and other organisations. SolarCity also noted that it will be “excellent” for utility-scale projects.
