June 22 (Renewables Now) - Irish ocean energy developer Simply Blue Group on Tuesday said it is adding a floating offshore wind project with a capacity of up to 1.3 GW in Northern Ireland to its development portfolio.

The project, called Olympic Offshore Wind, is located off the coast of County Down. It is the second offshore wind project that the company has announced for Northern Ireland and is a sister project to Nomadic Offshore Wind, of up to 500 MW, unveiled earlier this year.

Simply Blue said Olympic Offshore Wind will have an option to be developed in stages and will offer an opportunity for setting up a local supply chain.

Commenting on the announcement, Renewable NI head Steven Agnew said: “It is vital that government matches the ambition of the Simply Blue Group and puts in place the consenting regime needed to deliver a thriving offshore renewables industry.”

Simply Blue is partnering with French energy group TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) in the Celtic Sea and to target floating wind opportunities in the US.
