Oct 31, 2014 - German engineering major Siemens AG (ETR:SIE) has struck a long-term service and maintenance contract for over 2.2 GW of wind turbines at parks owned by US utility MidAmerican Energy Co (PINK:MDPWK).
In a joint statement on Thursday, the two companies said that Siemens will take care of 958 units of its own SWT-2.3 turbines installed at 12 wind farms in Iowa. More specifically, the company will provide service and maintenance for eight of MidAmerican’s operational parks for 10 years and will also cater for four additional plants that will be put on stream during the term of the agreement. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The 12 wind farms can generate enough power for about 665,000 local homes.
MidAmerican is controlled by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A). Its contract with Siemens is the German group’s largest onshore service agreement to date. Earlier this month, Siemens won 15-year service and maintenance contracts for over 300 MW of own wind turbines installed in Washington.
At present, Siemens provides service and maintenance for over 3,100 wind turbines in the Americas and over 7,600 globally with a combined capacity of nearly 18 GW.
