Siemens Gamesa presents 5.8-MW onshore wind turbines

April 3 (Renewables Now) - Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) today introduced a new onshore wind platform that includes a couple of turbine models with a rated capacity of 5.8 MW.

The Siemens Gamesa 5.X onshore platform consists of the SG 5.8-155 and the SG 5.8-170 models with rotor diameters of 155 and 170 metres (96.3-105.6 mi). Siemens Gamesa noted that the 170-metre rotor is the largest in the industry.

The two new turbines are suitable for high-, medium- and low-wind conditions. The SG 5.8-155 increases the swept area by 14% and annual energy production (AEP) by over 20% when compared with the SG 4.5-145, while the SG 5.8-170 boosts the swept area by over 37% and AEP by more than 32%.

Siemens Gamesa plans to install the first SG 5.8-155 prototype in mid-2020, while the start of production is expected in the final quarter of the same year. On the other hand, the first SG 5.8-170 prototype is planned for the third quarter of 2020 and its production should commence in the first three months of 2021.
