Dec 17, 2013 - ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) today said it had filed a planning application for a 16.1-MW extension to the 136-MW Harestanes wind farm in Scotland’s Dumfries and Galloway area.
The company, which is part of Spanish power utility Iberdrola (MCE:IBE), plans to add seven turbines to the 68 machines that have already been installed at the site. The Harestanes wind park generated first power at end-September or three months earlier than planned, the developer noted.
Initially, ScottishPower Renewables intended to install 19 turbines as part of the extension project, but later cut the number to seven.
Earlier this week, the Iberdrola subsidiary said it would abandon the up to 1,800-MW Argyll Array wind project off the Scottish coast due to technical and environmental issues. ScottishPower explained that the ground conditions at the Argyll Array site were too big a challenge at that time due to the presence of hard rock, while unfavourable wave conditions could also affect construction. Furthermore, the significant presence of basking sharks in the area calls for further environmental studies, the project developer said.
