Russia to have just 2.87 GW of non-hydro renewables in 2025

Russia’s cumulative installed non-hydro renewable power capacity is expected to grow to 2.87 GW by 2025, with the country realising just a tiny portion of its potential.

In a new report, consulting firm GlobalData says that Russia’s non-hydro renewables capacity will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.4% between 2015 and 2025. It currently has about 0.26 GW and in 2014, non-hydro renewables represented just 0.1% of total installed capacity.

Chiradeep Chatterjee, senior analyst at GlobalData, explained that non-hydro renewables development has been very low to date because of the availability of cheap conventional sources and the lack of a comprehensive legal base to develop clean energy, with few government incentives.

At the same time, Russia’s wind and biomass potential is estimated at 700 GW and 15 GW, respectively, and that is a lot.

In 2014, hydropower and gas-based power plants accounted for 20.4% and 47.5% of Russia’s installed capacity.
