Romania To Select Site for 2,400 MW Hydropower Plant by end-2009 – Media

BUCHAREST (Romania), May 27 (SeeNews) – Romania will select a location for a 2,400 megawatt (MW) hydropower plant on the Danube river by the end of the year, local media reported on Wednesday.

The government is evaluating two sites - in Macin, in the southeastern county of Tulcea, and Turnu Magurele, in the southern county of Teleorman, Bucharest-based daily Business Standard (www.standard.ro) reported.

The project may be implemented with participation of private investors, the daily quoted Romania’s Economy Minister Adriean Videanu as saying. He also said that talks with Bulgaria, Romania’s southern neighbour across the Danube, have already started.

Currently, Romania has a single hydropower plant on the Danube river, located at the Portile de Fier gorge, in the southwestern county of Mehedinti, with an installed capacity of 1,450 MW, the daily said.
