Rhineland-Palatinate opens 3.5 MW solar plant on ex-military depot
(SeeNews) – Jul 27, 2012 – The German state of Rhineland-Palatinate yesterday inaugurated a 3.5 MW solar plant, built on municipal land in the Clausen community, where earlier was a US armory.
The plant, containing 13,600 solar modules, will produce 3 million kWh solar power annually.
This will be enough to supply 600 households with clean electricity and save around 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
The Clausen community bought the land for the solar plant in 2010 with support from the state. Until then, the lot was empty after it was abandoned by the US armed forces in 1993. The seven-hectare field was once used to store weapons, including chemical arms.
