REPORT - India could create 300,000 jobs in renewables by 2022

More than 300,000 job positions can be created in India’s renewable energy sector by 2022, mainly in the rooftop solar field, according to a joint report by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW).

The report “Greening India’s Workforce: Gearing Up For Expansion of Solar and Wind Power in India,” was published on Tuesday.

In order to achieve its ambitious target of installing 160 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, the country could create job opportunities for more than one million people. More specifically, it could employ 237,980 people in rooftop solar and some 58,647 in ground-mounted solar, as well as 34,583 in the wind segment. Additionally, about 45,000 more workers could be hired by 2022 to meet photovoltaic (PV) module production demand.

By state, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh can create the largest number of jobs based on government targets, while wind jobs are likely to be concentrated in states that have wind targets. These are Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

In 2016-2017, India’s solar and wind industry added 21,000 new jobs and is expected to create about 25,000 more in the following year, the report says.
