Renewables hit 3% share in worldwide energy consumption in 2014

Non-hydro renewable energy sources met a record 3.0% of energy consumption globally in 2014, as compared to just 0.9% a decade earlier, shows a new report by BP Plc (LON:BP).

Renewables accounted for 6% of global power production, with that share being the highest in Europe & Eurasia. In the EU, in particular, non-hydro renewables have reached nearly 17% of power generation. Details on global renewables consumption are available in the table.

According to BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2015, wind energy consumption in 2014 has grown by 10.2% on the year or by 14.8 mtoe. Solar use jumped by 38.2% or by 11.6 mtoe. Global biofuels production rose by 7.4% or 4.9 mtoe.
